Annals of publish or perish - Expatica: AMSTERDAM — Medical specialists with the Erasmus Medical Centre (EMC) in Rotterdam kept secret the outbreak of the sexually transmitted disease LGV because they wanted to write first about it in an academic journal.

The sad thing is that, if you're familiar with the medical research world, you won't find this even remotely surprising. For all their claims about being driven by a desire to do good and not by any crass self-interest, medical researchers are as self-interested a bunch as you could hope to find. Publishing first means having a bigger reputation which translates into getting more grant money. But that's OK, because they're in the not-for-profit sector.
