Mandatory religious education in the UAE - Gulf News

QUOTE.
Jumma Al Salami, undersecretary of private education at the Ministry of Education, told Gulf News there were followers of Islam who did not want their children to attend Islamic studies classes.

"Muslim children should study Islamic studies and others should study Christian studies. Those who are from different sects of Islam should attend Islamic classes. If parents do not want their children to attend Islamic studies, they should obtain court approval saying they are not Muslim. Their children will then be allowed to attend Christian studies, otherwise Muslim students should attend Islamic studies, regardless of what sect they belong to," he said.

Some parents, Al Salami said, complained their children were afraid because they were told that if they did not obey Allah they would burn in hell.
