Women working alongside men - Theecongroup: "This was a discussion we had last week in our economics lecture. We were left wondering why so many high paying jobs such as engineering and finance are predominantly male and jobs such as secretaries and phone operators are predominantly female. This article clearly shows this comparison. The men of the White House are working the higher paying jobs while the women are working the lower end / less skilled jobs."

I don't know the answer to that puzzle. Could it be that women don't like something that's in common with the kinds of jobs that pay more? Could it be that women don't like working with men? Could it be that women don't like competing with men?

We're a department of 15 men and one female administrative assistant started in 1997. Our success rate in hiring over the years is around 20 for 30 males, 0 for 6 for females. Our admin is our longest serving member of department and has had many opportunities to change departments. She favors the working environment in economics.

I have spoken with some women who won't even interview for jobs in Muslim countries out of concern that their personal freedoms would be seriously compromised. But that doesn't completely explain why they interview for job and then don't take it when it is offered to them, although it is likely a partial explanation: "I'll interview for this job, but I sure hope something else comes along."

Plus, one can use an offer from one school as leverage in negotiations with a school one prefers. Lastly, the offer is a signal of quality; others looked at you and found you worth hiring.
