A heritage that must not be lost - Gulf News

Quote: In the emirates, with its multiculturism, apparently the youth are losing their skills in written and spoken Arabic. It would not do for this glorious language to become another dead one.

Why? Are youth losing interest in Arabic? Has there been a change in incentives that has caused them to lose interest? Is it because of a lack of college textbooks written in Arabic (as noted by the Arab Human Devopment Reports), and therefore a lack of use of Arabic in higher education? Is English a pre-requisite for a good job?

A look at the economics of language can be found here. Here is an extensive bibliography.
