Blogging the UAE: Gulf News:In nations with less democratic values, blogs are a more critical medium of public debate. In Iran, 75,000 blogs have made Farsi the blogosphere’s fourth language. In the UAE, however, weblogs start and remain personal. They give individual reflections on life from a glitterball of cultural perspectives. A brief search turns up a UAE national’s shopping trip to New York, a Pakistani’s lament on the immodesty of modern dress...Writers are generally young and frequently female. Indeed, many sites resemble an archetypical teenage girl’s diary, stuffed with details of films, meals and intense friendships.
