Big brother black box watch: Dubai - Gulf News

---QUOTE---
The smart box will record information regarding the speed of the car and transmit it through a wireless system via satellite. Motorists speeding, Col Al Raisi, told the press, will be penalised. He, however, emphasised a decision has not been taken to adopt the technology.

The concept is not new. Gulf News reported on March 19, 2004, that a system to monitor driving was being developed. The Gulf News report said the black box will employ the latest telecom and GPS technologies. It will monitor driving patterns, record car speeds and use of brakes. It will ensure the driver is within the speed limit and give warnings if it is exceeded. Fines will be recorded in the box and automatically transmitted to the traffic department.

Yesterday, however, news agencies reported that IBM had announced a four-year, $125 million (Dh460million) deal with the UAE to design a custom traffic management system in the country. IBM says the deal is the largest in automotive information technology history. The monitoring system will be installed in tens of thousands of vehicles starting next year, IBM said.

When a car goes above the speed limit, the device gives the driver a warning and sends data on the way the car is being driven to authorities.
