University of Colorado president resigns - Instapundit

Football brought her down.

America is a funny place. College presidents ought to be judged on the university's academic performance under their tenure. More often, though, what happens is that they are judged on their management of major sports.

I suppose there are stories we could weave about why judging sports performance bolsters academic performance. Perhaps, for example, big donors are more concerned with sports than academics. Perhaps alumni cannot judge current academic performance, but they do know that if the football program is doing well that makes their degree look good.

I note that in other parts of the world, university sports are not a big deal. Even in neighboring Canada. Ever heard of the Grey Cup? Can you spell it? Can I spell it?
