Sharjah Ruler orders salary increase for government employees - Emirates News Agency, WAM

Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah has ordered a salary hike for UAE nationals and resident expatriates working in local Government Departments in Sharjah emirate. "The hike which will be effective from May 1 will include civilian and military personnel working in local government departments of Sharjah emirate.

According to Sheikh Sultan's order, UAE nationals working in the local Government institutions of Sharjah will receive a 25% increase, whereas non-UAE nationals will get a 15%.

As he ordered the decision, Sheikh Sultan expressed his deep appreciation for the decision taken yesterday by President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, increasing salaries of UAE nationals and expatriates working in UAE Federal Ministries and in the local department of the Abu Dhabi emirate. Sheikh Sultan's decision today is in line with this federal decision which is aimed at ensuring decent living conditions for UAE nationals and expatriates.

So John, you say you are an economist. Is this a good decision, or is it just going to fuel the rampant inflation in the UAE? Quite apart from the inherent racism of the decision (25% rise for Emaratis, 15% for foreigners), this is absolutely not going to help the gubmnt's aim of trying to get more locals employed by the private sector.

And for me as the owner of a small business, can I now increase my prices by 25%?

No, thought not.
