400 labourers living in inhuman conditions in camp - Khaleej Times: "SHARJAH - Shacked up in a hidden corner of Sharjah, a group of workers from the subcontinent have been living in inhuman conditions at a dilapidated makeshift labour camp. Employed by the Umm Al Zamool Company, the 400-odd unskilled workers from India and Pakistan claim that they had been subjected to constant humiliation by their employers who, in their words, have been arbitrarily deducting large sums of money from their salaries, leaving them with little else."

“I thought the UAE was a good place to work. But I was terribly mistaken.”
The men have been on strike since March 29, but agreed to go back to work today after the Ministry of Labour intervened. The owner was also given two days to fix a basic pay scale and provide free accommodation, workers said.
“We have been asked to start working,” said one. “The authorities have also asked the company management to implement its directions within two days. We have never hesitated to do our duty.”
