Ethnicity of Muslims in America
o Only 25 percent of Muslim Americans are of Arab descent. (See figure above.)
o According to a 2000 Zogby poll, only 23 percent of Arab Americans are Muslim.
o According to figures in Religious Congregations and Membership in the U.S. 2000, it is estimated that there are 1.6 million Muslim adherents in the United States. Virtually all live in metro areas. 68 percent reside in metro areas with population of 5 million or more. (RCMS built its estimate from a telephone survey of one-third of U.S. mosques conducted by Ihsan Bagby, author of the study linked in the heading of this post.)
